Southern Crossing, Fremantle
Southern Crossing consists of a bronze man and dingo, and a timber and painted mild steel gangway with etched stainless steel panels.
The mild steel rails of the gangway were beginning to corrode, causing a public safety hazard. The cause of the corrosion was identified as galvanic action between the mild steel rails and stainless steel fittings.
- The gangway was dismantled; the corrosion removed and treated, and then reassembled using Teflon spacers and nylon washers to prevent any contact between the mild steel and stainless steel.
- The sculpture was cleaned and the gangway repainted.
- The bronzes were treated with benzotriazole to provide extra protection from corrosion and then coated with microcrystalline wax.
- The entire sculpture was coated with a sacrificial anti-graffiti coating.
