Gate 2: Coalesce, State Library of Western Australia
Akio Makigawa’s Gate 2: Coalesce is made from polished black and white marble. Over time, the marble had lost its sheen and the black stones had faded to grey. The sculpture was also extensively chipped due to skateboarding on the site.
- ArtWorks Conservation cleaned the sculpture in order to remove dirt, bird droppings, graffiti and previous anti-graffiti coatings.
- The sculpture was treated to prevent further biological growth
- The stone was coated and waxed to restore the colour and gloss of the stone.
- Losses and cracks were infilled using a tinted polyester based filler.
- Following an engineers report, excess mortar was removed from the capping stones to allow them to move without further cracking.
- Alterations to the surrounding landscaping have now greatly reduced skateboarding on the site.
