Royal Coat of Arms, Parliament of Western Australia

As part of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly’s 175th anniversary in 2007, ArtWorks Conservation undertook the treatment of a Coat-of-Arms. The Coat-of-Arms is made from cast concrete and was originally attached to the old Legislative Council building. The Coat-of-Arms had been removed from the wall during building restorations and attached to a piece of chipboard and subsequently attached to the entrance of the Legislative Assembly in the Parliament House of Western Australia. Over the years, the detail of the Coat-of-Arms had been obscured by various restoration layers of plaster, clay, a sand/adhesive mixture, and acrylic paint.

ArtWorks Conservation painstakingly removed the extra layers using hand tools in order to reveal the fine detail of the original surface. Losses were infilled and previous restorations improved.

Once the extra layers had been removed, the backing board was painted to match the Legislative Assembly entrance.
